How Do mRNA Vaccines Work? Dr. Paul Offit, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, explains that mRNA is a protein that instructs our bodies to make the spike protein on the surface of COVID-19 viruses. Using the mRNA as a vaccine, our bodies learn to make this spike protein and then make antibodies against the virus to protect us from the disease.

Polio Survivors—Ann's Story: To illustrate the importance of vaccines, the MaineHealth Child Health team interviewed people living with post-polio syndrome. Ann Crocker, who contracted polio as a child in 1952, describes how polio affected her life. After finally recovering—not needing canes, braces, or wheelchairs—she began to experience post-polio syndrome 25 years later, gradually losing what she had gained.

They explain how the vaccines help our immune system protect us from future infection. Vaccines trigger antibodies that can kill the real virus before it can cause disease.

This January 12, 2021, BBC News segment reviews three vaccines that have been approved by the United Kingdom: vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech, University of Oxford and AstraZeneca, and Moderna.
