This is an example of a cutaneous anthrax lesion caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. Important to note is the characteristic coal-black coloration of the lesion, from which the organism derived its name, for in Greek, anthrax means coal.

This patient’s forearm and hand reveal a cluster of boils (or carbuncles) primarily on the hand and wrist. These lesions developed during a cutaneous anthrax infection caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis.
