In February 2010, Justine lost her 3-month-old son, Collin, to whooping cough (pertussis). This 11-minute video tells Justine's story.

Determining who has pertussis can be difficult. Whenever possible, a nasopharyngeal (NP) swab or aspirate should be obtained from all persons with suspected cases. CDC offers two videos (4 min) in English and Spanish that demonstrate how to properly obtain and transport pertussis specimens.

When Callie was a couple weeks old, she developed a persistent cough, and during a return visit to the doctor, Callie stopped breathing and was rushed to the hospital. Two days later, Callie stopped breathing again and could not be saved. The young infant had contracted pertussis, a highly contagious bacterial disease.
