CDC ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS ON VARICELLA AND VARICELLA VACCINE
More children die of varicella disease every year in the United States than from any other
vaccine-preventable disease. According to National Immunization Survey data (1997),
less than 30% of two-year olds received varicella vaccination. Varicella
vaccination is recommended for all susceptible persons one year of age and older by the
Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the
American Academy of Family Physicians.
Today the Immunization Action Coalition has placed on its website, 12 pages of clinical
questions and answers on varicella vaccine and varicella disease written by CDC experts.
We hope these questions and answers will motivate health professionals to vaccinate their
susceptible patients whenever these patients visit their offices. Click here for the web
version of this document:www.cdc.gov/nip/Q&A/clinqa/var.htm.
In 1996 the Immunization Action Coalition created a patient education brochure called,
"Chickenpox isn't just an itchy, contagious rash..." This brochure is
camera-ready, copyright free, and reviewed by CDC for technical accuracy. To obtain a copy
