CDC releases provisional ACIP recommendations for Tdap use in people age 65 and older
On March 21, CDC posted ACIP Provisional Tdap Recommendations on its website. Some of the content is reprinted below.
On February 22, 2012, the ACIP voted to recommend tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid and acellular pertussis vaccine (Tdap) for adults aged 65 years and older. . . .
Two Tdap vaccines are licensed in the United States.
- Boostrix (GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, Rixensart, Belgium) is approved for use in persons aged 10 years and older.
- Adacel (Sanofi Pasteur, Toronto, Canada) is approved for use in persons aged 11 through 64 years.
Updated recommendation
- For adults aged 19 years and older who previously have not received a dose of Tdap, a single dose of Tdap should be given.
- Tdap should be administered regardless of interval since the last tetanus or diphtheria toxoid-containing vaccine.
- Adults should receive a Tdap dose if the dose is recommended and no record of previous administration exists.
Guidance on use of Tdap products for adults aged 65 years and older
- Providers should not miss an opportunity to vaccinate persons aged 65 years and older with Tdap, and may administer the vaccine that they have available.
- When feasible, for adults aged 65 years and older, Boostrix should be used; however, either vaccine product administered to a person aged 65 years and older provides protection and is considered valid.

CDC advises providers to use all the schedules and footnotes in the 2012 U.S. Childhood Immunization Schedule
CDC is advising vaccination providers to use all three pages of the 2012 U.S. Childhood Immunization Schedule as a single, cohesive document. That is, the three schedules and footnotes that make up the 2012 document should be used together, not separately.
To help providers do this, CDC has combined all three schedules and footnotes into a 4-page document titled Recommended Immunization Schedules for Persons Aged 0 Through 18 Years—United States, 2012.

IAC posts updated VISs for polio and Td/Tdap vaccines in six additional languages
IAC recently posted updated VISs for inactivated polio and Td/Tdap vaccines in these six languages: Armenian, Cambodian, Farsi (spoken in Bahrain, Iran, United Arab Emirates), Hmong, Korean, and Tagalog. IAC thanks the California Department of Public Health, Immunization Branch, for these six translations. The updated polio and Td/Tdap VISs are now available in 16 languages.

CDC publishes report on progress made toward global polio eradication in Africa in 2011
CDC published Progress Toward Global Polio Eradication—Africa, 2011 in the March 23 issue of MMWR (pages 190–194). A press summary of the article is reprinted below.
Interruption of wild poliovirus (WPV) transmission in Nigeria is critical to the successful eradication of polio in Africa. In 2011, 350 WPV cases were reported by 12 African countries, a 47 percent decrease from the 657 cases reported in 2010. Importation of WPV into 29 previously polio-free African countries during 2003–2011 led to reestablished WPV transmission in Angola, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Sudan, though the last confirmed case in Sudan was in 2009. Since 2003, multiple polio outbreaks in Africa have been traced to importations from Nigeria, the only country in Africa in which transmission has never ceased. To successfully eradicate polio, it is critical to interrupt the transmission of WPV from Nigeria. Urgent action is needed to strengthen supplemental immunization responses throughout the region and particularly in the polio-affected countries of Nigeria, Chad, and DRC, and to maintain sensitive surveillance throughout Africa.

The 10th National Conference on Immunization and Health Coalitions (NCIHC) will take place in New Orleans on May 23–25. NCIHC is the only conference solely dedicated to collaboration and partnership as a way to improve the health status of communities. It offers skills-building, tools, and practical examples to help local, state, and national organizations build and sustain successful partnerships.
