TETANUS TOOLKIT: IAC PULLS TOGETHER TETANUS IMMUNIZATION RESOURCES FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND THEIR PATIENTS

On October 31, "IAC EXPRESS" published "Unprotected People #58-#62: Tetanus, a Virtually Preventable Disease, Still Endangers and Claims Lives," which presented five accounts of people who had suffered or died from tetanus. The point of offering readers several accounts was to give them examples they can use to convince patients from many populations about the need to be vaccinated against tetanus.

In the same manner, the Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) has pulled together this Tetanus Toolkit of resources with the goal of presenting information useful for health professionals in a range of settings and for patients from a variety of backgrounds. To that end, we've assembled tetanus-specific information for professionals and patients, as well as general information about increasing childhood and adult immunization rates. Sources for the information include IAC, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and professional organizations.

DATA FOR PROVIDER/PATIENT EDUCATION:
"Adults aged greater than or equal to 60 years continue to be at highest risk for tetanus and for severe disease. . . . For adults 60 years or older, the increased risk for tetanus was nearly sevenfold that for persons aged 5-19 years and twofold that for persons aged 20-59 years. The case-fatality ratio varied from 2.3% for persons aged 20-39 years to 16% for persons aged 40-59 years and to 18% for persons aged greater than or equal to 60 years. . . Waning of immunity to tetanus declines rapidly starting at the age of 40 years and, by the age of 70 years, only 27.8% of persons have protective levels of antibodies to tetanus toxoid."
